Liu Xuan Qi depicts Singapore’s very own ice cream cart in this painting. Many would immediately be reminded of slabs of ice cream served in plastic cups or between slices of bread. Ice cream street hawking has been around in Singapore since the 1960s and remains popular amongst patrons due to its cheap pricing, affordability and nostalgic taste. However, these ice cream carts are starting to slowly disappear and becoming less of a common sight due to the aging of their operators and rapid modernisation in the city.
This series of paintings have become one of Liu Xuan Qi’s significant collection of artworks as they touch on past memories and evoke a sense of nostalgia amongst viewers. Liu Xuan Qi won the platinum award at the UOB painting of the year competition in 2012.
