Flight of the Dragonfly

In traditional Chinese painting the background is usually a large blank. We call this phenomenon liubai, leaving black which is an aesthetic concept of elegant purity. This painting nicely reflects the effects of liubai which allows the viewer to further appreciate the vibrant colours applied on the flower as well as the ink wash effect on the lotus leaf. Born in 1954, Wen Cheng Yi graduated from the Southwest University College of Fine Arts. He has been a professional artist for 42 years.
