Backlane at Aljunied

Paintings of back alley in Singapore form an important segment in Zhu Hong’s practice as an artist. The spiral staircases, back doors of shophouses and religious ornaments that line the back alley are all included in these illustrations. Zhu Hong brings out sunshine and brightness of the back alleys which are contrast with impressions that many might have of back alleys being dark and ominous.

In 2019. Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery held a solo exhibition titled “Emerging with Colours” featuring 40 paintings by Zhu Hong. This painting, Backlane at Aljunied was one of the artworks that were showcased.
